N.B. White Gallery Update
Posted 11/19/2024
As the Gallery Committee prepares for our next show, we thought we would share some of the history with you.
In late 1980s, the south wing portion of the church was imagined and designed. This would create space for Sunday school classrooms and meeting rooms. It enclosed what is now the lovely courtyard. Spacious areas to mount exhibitions of the visual arts were envisioned by the Rector, the Rev. Nicholson B. White, and by William Collins, an architect and parishioner. Funds were donated to make this come true.
The addition was completed in 1990, and the South Wing Gallery, operated by a committee chaired by Barbara Collins, the architect’s wife, came to life! Barbara and the committee organized four art shows per year, tapping into the vibrant Cleveland-area art scene. Many of the area’s most talented artists have exhibited here. Our mission is this: We celebrate God’s gift of artistic expression by exhibiting works of art by local artists.
We have worked with a wide variety of exhibitors! We have organized and installed shows of artistic parishioners. Our own Rev. Nicholson B. White displayed his photography in an exquisite show titled,“The Eclectic Eye.”
In 2014, the South Wing Gallery was renamed the N.B. White Gallery, in honor of Rev. White, who had since retired. Many parishioners and artists turned out for the dedication event!
Our committee is comprised of parishioners who appreciate the arts and are interested in maintaining this wonderful ministry. We continue bringing art to our gallery space, providing many a unique place to exhibit. We hope you enjoy the gallery while at St. Paul’s. The artists are grateful for the exposure and opportunity to connect to this community.
Unlike many gallery hosts, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church does not receive a commission from the sale of exhibited works. If you wish to purchase one of the pieces on display, our show booklets provide contact information for artists. You can reach out to them directly!
The Gallery Committee hosts an artists’ reception for the Winter Show on Friday, December 6, 5 - 7 p.m. All are welcome!
