The performances of Olivier Messiaen’s chef d’oeuvre, The Nativity of the Lord (La Nativité du Seigneur) were a mainstay in January of each year during St. Paul’s organist Karel Paukert’s tenure at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Following his retirement there, he has offered the cycle annually at St. Paul’s.
The cycle consists of nine movements: The Virgin and Child, The Shepherds, Eternal Purposes, The Word, The Children of God, The Angels, Jesus Suffers Torment, The Magi and God Among Us. Karel fell in love with this particular work as a student at Prague Conservatory, but because the score was unavailable to him, did not perform it until he came to America. He puts Messiaen on the same pedestal as J.S. Bach and C. Franck.
Please come share in Karel’s joy as he offers, once again, The Nativity of The Lord on Sunday, January 19, at 4 p.m.
