St. Paul’s Senior Choir, conducted by Dr. Steven Plank, will sing Evensong on Sunday, March 6, at 5 p.m. The music includes a setting of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis by Thomas Walmisley, the organist at both Trinity and St. John’s Colleges, Cambridge, in the middle of the nineteenth century. The anthem will be Sir Edward Bairstow’s beloved “Jesu, the very thought of Thee.”
The music will also include a modern psalm setting by the recently deceased Benjamin Hutto. Well-known in the American Anglican choral world, Hutto was for a number of years associated with St. John’s, Lafayette Square in Washington, DC – the “Church of the Presidents”– and, earlier in his career, spent a number of years at Christ Church, Charlotte (coincidentally, the parish at which our 14th rector, Nicholson B. White, served prior to coming to St. Paul’s).
